Tablet Capping & Lamination

Tablet capping and lamination is a problem that can occur during the manufacturing process for tablets. Running powder compaction tests can help reduce the risk of such issues, and our simulations can identify problem areas before production starts.

At Merlin, we're experts in compaction science, offering a wide range of testing services that help clients better understand their powders and formulations.

We can provide a range of standard tests, or offer bespoke testing to suit your specific needs.

Capping

Tablet capping is a highly common problem that can occur during tablet production. It occurs when the rounded, dome top of the tablet comes away from the main body - removing the cap.

It occurs when the particles in the tablet are either too dry, over lubricated or highly elastic, and prevent them from bonding correctly during compression. Faster production speeds typically see more tablet capping, making simulation before production highly recommended.

Lamination

Similar to capping, lamination is also when the tablet shears. However, instead of the top being removed, the tablet is split horizontally in the main body. It can occur after compression, but also during storage.

Tests that help you understand the compaction properties of your formulation help identify issues in production. Conducting these tests early, before production, can significantly reduce wasted spend and allows for formulation changes before manufacture.
